FedEx said a winter storm caused substantial disruptions to FedEx Express flights and sorting at Memphis and Indianapolis hubs Jan. 12.

The company issued a service alert warning of potential delays for packages committed for delivery across the U.S. Jan. 12.

FedEx ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest North American for-hire carriers.

FedEx has a major overnight operation at Memphis International Airport, home of its world hub. Its No. 2 U.S. hub is in Indianapolis.

Passenger airlines canceled 20 flights and delayed 20 in and out of Memphis because of the winter storm Jan. 12.

Runways were open, but the airport advised travelers to check with airlines for latest information before driving to the airport., an online flight tracking tool, said 15 outbound and five inbound flights had been canceled at Memphis.

“Some of this is due to weather here, some due to weather elsewhere, and some cancellations were preemptive last night with airlines opting not to send in planes in anticipation of the overnight precipitation,” airport spokesman Glen Thomas said in an update at 11:30 a.m.

“Airport crews continue to work around the clock to keep runways clear for safe arrivals and departures,” Thomas added.

“The airlines, which are responsible for de-icing procedures, have also been working diligently to de-ice planes in preparation for departure. That procedure can contribute to delays, but it is a safety measure that is essential in these weather conditions,” Thomas said.

“Passengers should also allow for extra time to get to the airport with the current road conditions,” Thomas added.

FedEx said customers should check the status of their shipments at or call 1-800-GO-FEDEX.

“FedEx has contingency plans in place to lessen the effects of severe weather on our operations and service. Our priorities are always the safety and well-being of our team members and providing the best service possible,” a company statement said.
